We don't need space tourism

Orbital Assembly wants to open Space Hotel with artificial gravity in 2027! I wounder what the carbon footprint for this will be per person? 100 ton for a return trip? We are in a climate crisis and this is what people spend their time building? And money to experience. Without a life-supporting atmosphere on Earth. How long will this station keep running? We can't escape from our duty to save the planet. This is not the solution. I am not against space research but we don't need people doing it for fun! A sustainable carbon footprint is <2 ton per person. There is no budget for space tourism in that. In fact. Sell your private jet too! And please stay on the ground as much as possible. Thank you for your message. We also share your concerns about protecting our planet and accelerating a sustainable future for humanity. Our vision isn't just for people to have fun in space, although the adventure and thrill will be an early attractor, but we want people from all walks of life to be able to live, work, and thrive in space. You may have heard of the "Overview Effect" that space travelers experience. We look forward to more of humanity gaining this perspective, an awareness of Earth's fragility, and being inspired to protect our fragile planet. New launch vehicles like the SpaceX Starship are being designed to run on fully renewable propellants that have the potential of being carbon neutral. We're exploring all options to make the station itself as sustainable as possible. Additionally, we're exploring using the technology we are developing to build the station to also build space solar power systems which could provide near continuous solar power to most population centers which could accelerate the transition off fossil fuels. We understand the concern of traditional space exploration having a large carbon footprint but we feel our work will have a net positive effect on the environment.

Thanks for your answer Orbital. If you are serious with your concern for the climate it would be awesome if you make your journey the first "carbon neutral" space travel possible. Ie. Change the world's "potential" to "will be". Do you have any links regarding how SpaceX Starship plans to achieve carbon neutral rocket flights? I would like to read more. How they handle the high altitude effect etc. I am not against space development. But you need to incorporate the climate from day 1 in your project. Have you calculated your business's carbon footprint? Are your investors aware of that?

@Rentzhog Thank you Ingmar. I will communicate these additional thoughts to our team for consideration. SpaceX related questions should be directed to them. Tim Alatorre, Architect, LEED AP BD+C, NCARB Orbital Assembly Corporation

Space tourism can become neutral. I don’t think that activities that can become carbon neutral should be forbidden. Just put a hefty price on GHG emissions, say 200 euros per ton of CO2eq in 2025 and 1000 by 2040 and capitalism will become carbon neutral. Criticizing capitalism, tourism or the freedom to fly is a dead end. Humans want to fly: nobody can fight that. Like any other economic activity, flight can be made carbon neutral through efficient systems design. Think out of the box. Developing space exploration does not mean abandoning Earth. In fact, Aerospace has been essential for climate research and climate science. It has been subsidized by government until now and is slowly becoming funded by private funds. What’s the matter with that?

If this was a carbon neutral space hotel (without offsetting and including the 🚀 ) I would be very happy to give this initiative a climate love instead. Unfortunately that is not the case. We need to half the world's emissions before 2030. Our focus should be on that. If more people stay on the ground like me we will help the flight industry to electrify faster. I would love to buy the first electric trans-atlantic flight ticket. I am not against space research or exploration. But 400 000 space tourist per year with fossil fuel technology is not a good thing.

the lol was to Doug but that is a good point the more $$$ one has the desire to wantonly consume without temperance becomes a major privilege 🤔

This could be another example of rich people polluting earth while poors being victim of It. Just nonsensical!

I think space is one of the few areas we really do need to keep on pushing in. But space tourism I don’t believe should ever be mainstream. There are other ways to generate the funds to explore space and create a backup human colony on Mars for example. Which is important because there may be a very limited window in which it’s possible to create a Mars base. Humans should have a backup planet while also doing everything we can to save Earth. So many fellow climate activists get this totally wrong and it’s so frustrating.

I agree with you. Space exploration is a good thing if we do it with a purpose. But just for fun is not a good purpose.

If we get the wealthy off planet then the earth might have a fighting chance. 😉

They’d have to figure out how to grow food/materials up there first. Meanwhile, they are likely spending at least some of their money on the products of agriculture that is not yet replicable in space.
