Forest fires in Chile: Government will fine companies that force volunteer firefighters to go back to their jobs

The 280 fires in central and south of Chile have caused 26 fatalities and the destruction of hundreds of thousands of acres of forest. In the middle of the operations to face the catastrophe, the deputy minister of labour, Giorgio Boccardo, emphasized the right of the firefighters to be absent from their jobs during the emergency. This is because firefighters do not have paid work and depend on other sources to get a salary. Their labor, though, has been essential to saving lives and controlling the progression of forest fires.

Giorgio Boccardo said that the law guarantees that "firefighters can be absent from the workplaces during the emergency. There is no limit time". Moreover, the deputy minister called to report companies not complying, and assured offenders would be fined. He also highlighted that firefighters do not need to compensate for the hours they are not working and that their salaries will not be affected.
