Flash foods in Delhi; 9 inches of rainfall in 24 hours; a first in the last 88 years

Today’s world has introduced us to a situation of extremes. Extreme heat followed by extreme rains. Temperatures were hitting 49 degrees in May and June and now we see heavy rainfalls leading to flash floods in just 24 hours! According to the Indian Meteorological Department, New Delhi has reported 228.1 millimeters (nearly 9 inches) of rainfall in a 24-hour period. This was the highest recorded rainfall in June for the last 88 years. Reuters reported that 11 people died from the rain and flooding while four people were drowned in submerged underpasses. The roof of the Delhi airport crashed because it could not handle the weight of the rainfall! Navdeep Dahiya, an independent weatherman, rightly commented, Delhi capital region “is becoming home to extreme weather every season now.” Honestly, let me know when it all goes back to ‘normal’. I will wait. And this is happening the world over. If this will not wake the people in charge to take active climate action, I do not know what will! Read more on the flash floods happening in Delhi:
