Concerns over new police powers in Victoria

The Victorian government is on the limelight after introducing new anti-protest measures that could be used to crack down on the climate movement into a suite of fresh measures touted as necessary to combat antisemitis. A suite of legislative proposals have been brought up to crack down on what is believed to be antisemitism and extremism at protests. The proposals were announced in the wake of an arson attack on a Melbourne synagogue. Some of the proposals includes banning protests outside of places of worship, banning flying flags of groups the Australian government has listed as terrorist organisations, wearing face masks and balaclavas at protests, and the use of lock-on devices. Although there are already laws in place to prevent a number of these things, the proposal would give police wide-ranging discretionary powers that could be used against other protest movements. Police powers already exist to request protesters remove face masks in prescribed areas, and police already have move-on direction power for disturbance of the peace and not following that is a penalty.

The proposed laws in Victoria risk overreach by granting police powers that could unintentionally stifle legitimate protest movements like climate activism, raising concerns about the balance between security and democratic freedoms.

This is so disappointing. Police should provide public safety, and people have a right to protest when advocating for climate action and social justice.

@walter_lungayi Absolutely. The right to protest is fundamental in a democracy, and expanding police powers in ways that could suppress climate activism undermines both public safety and civic freedoms.

People do have the right to protest for their needs to be met.. they should not be banned from protesting.

@rosebellendiritu I agree. Protesting is a democratic right, and silencing voices seeking justice, especially for critical issues like climate action, sets a dangerous precedent.

Victoria deserves policies that prioritize fairness and transparency, not ones that risk silencing the very people they're meant to serve.

@princess_nel_268 Policies should protect public safety while respecting citizens' rights, ensuring that advocacy for vital causes like climate action remains unhindered and democratic values are upheld.

The climate movement is unstoppable and no amount of retrogressive laws will bring it down. Shame on the victorian authorities!

banning protests is wrong as long as the individuals are not bringing about any kind of violence .
