Reducing deforestation in the Brazilian Amazon

Deforestation in the Brazilian Amazon has shown a significant decline in July, continuing a positive trend since Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva assumed office earlier this year. Data released by Brazil's national space research institute, INPE, reveals that 500 square kilometers of tropical rainforest were cleared in Brazil's Amazon region during July, representing a remarkable 66% reduction compared to the same month last year under President Jair Bolsonaro's administration. During Bolsonaro's time in power, environmental laws were rolled back, illegal de-foresters were granted amnesty, and there were calls for large-scale conversion of the Amazon for agricultural purposes, leading to a surge in deforestation rates. However, since Lula's return to the presidency, he has actively worked towards restoring environmental protections and garnering international support for preserving the Amazon ecosystem. Considering the ongoing climate change threat, scientists have warned that continued deforestation could destabilize the region, potentially causing vast forest areas to die off and be replaced by savannas and fire-prone dry woodlands. The final estimate for forest loss in the 12 months leading up to July 31 will be released in October or November, based on higher resolution imagery, while last year's official estimate reported 11,568 square kilometers of forest lost.
