Multiple oil pipeline leaks in the Niger Delta, that affected local farmers and communities is what started a long battle in court. Friends of the Earth brought the case to Dutch court that found Shell's Nigerian subsidiary SPDC to be responsible for the oil spills, ordering Shell to pay for damages to farmers.
