Multiple oil pipeline leaks in the Niger Delta, that affected local farmers and communities is what started a long battle in court. Friends of the Earth brought the case to Dutch court that found Shell's Nigerian subsidiary SPDC to be responsible for the oil spills, ordering Shell to pay for damages to farmers. Environmental & human rights Lawyer Steven Donziger calls it a landmark victory, that will influence other cases against big oil in the future. “This legal ruling knocks out a key defense used by the industry in Dutch courts in a way that will have positive ramifications for similar cases in countries across the world. Bad for the oil industry. Great for the planet!” Well done to the team at Friends of the Earth Netherlands for this historic win!
