97% of new energy in the US is carbon-free

Here's an encouraging article by Dan McCarthy of Canary Media discussing new numbers from the U.S. Energy Information Administration. The gist: in 2024, 97% of new U.S. energy capacity is set to be carbon-free. Most of that comes from solar, which might be expected, but for my money the most interesting bit is that the second-largest share is coming from batteries. The rapid deployment of grid-scale battery storage is a hugely exciting development. Rolling out our storage capacity is critical as we turn more and more to (variable) renewable sources of energy.

There is, of course, also some not-so-encouraging news: overall GHG emissions in the U.S. are expected to be slightly up this year, despite this "clean energy bonanza." Even so, energy trends are moving in the right direction. And, hey, if the U.S. is down to only 3% of new energy projects burning fossil fuels in 2024, does it seem so unrealistic that we could get down to 0% in 2025? I don't think so.

Renewables are becoming more cost-competitive compared to fossil fuels, and policies like tax incentives for clean energy projects and regulations on emissions are further encouraging this transformation.
