Stop wrapping every single pepper in plastic

Each time I visit any of ICAs grocery stores I am very disappointed with seeing this big company wrap each and every single pepper in its own plastic. This is just a waste of plastic and adding to the huge amount of plastic use the world does not need. WRAP recently published a report adressing this issue, concluding that wrapping fruit and vegetables in plastic does not lead to less food waste by makung the fruit or vegetable last longer. Instead, the wrapping leads to more food waste as many costumers buy more food than they need. Therefore, I believe that ICA needs to stop their plastic wrapping.

We do use plastic around some of our products to increase durability and thereby decrease food waste. However, we strive to minimize packaging material as much as possible and to make it easy for the customer to recycle the packaging correctly. We also work hard to reduce the amount of plastic and use plastic made from renewable raw materials. Our packaging strategy includes clear goals for recyclable packaging by 2025 and recycled or renewable material by 2030. In addition, we are constantly looking for new solutions to protect our common environment and reduce the use of packaging.

Eureka: nature as the best designer evolutionized a natural packaging for all fruits already, their natural skin. 2nd: moulding food is an indicator of wasteful overproduction. BOOM! Typical capitalistic sub benefition of the crude oil plastic industry. Lobbyism at its best. Employees seem to fear hell from somewhere to not speak up against such logically counter life practices.   Thank you for answering. But as the person above says, studies show that plastic wrapping does not work. Would it not be better to stop the wrapping? Or purchase a less amount of pepper if the problem is that the pepper is going bad before being sold out.

  @ica I would love to see reports and data showing that plastic wrapping actually increases durability and decrease food waste. In many countries peppers and other vegetables are not wrapped in plastic it would be interesting to see if they have more waste there.

  Can you share the independent scientific study showing that wrapping peppers in plastic increases their durability, please. It would be good also to see the study that justifies your choice of wrapping individual peppers over the risk of wasting the product on environmental and health issues. (plastic particles are found in people’s blood and pass the blood-brain barrier). Finally, please disclose whether you have been lobbied by oil or plastic companies before taking this decision.   @ica You’re missing the point. UNNECESSARY use of plastic has to be stopped. Plastic should only be used in areas where it’s necessary, for example MEDICAL usage - and NOT driving by profits only. Somehow before the mindless use of plastic, people and businesses managed to survive.

  @sarah_chabane actually pepper can be solar dryed and parked in papers and whilst cooking it can be soaked in water to turn fresh again... Hope this makes sense.. Thank you

  @ica Can someone from your team connect with me? I am well aware of your challenge and agree that when products are packaged in plastic, they leave longer and less waste, but it is not healthy for us or the planet. There is another great idea I can share with you, and I can also help to deal with it as I myself found a solution: the big plastic container and the refrigerator, which are too effective, and also, as I am from a developing country, sometimes the benefit of it is that not much damage is done to nature, but a lot of food is wasted because we Georgians buy products by the few kilograms. (Of course, not myself.) We have a place called Bazar, or like Carefoor, where there is no packaged food but mostly locally produced, reduced-priced, affordable products and a lot of food waste because of the higher prices and no health food propaganda. One of the reasons for this practice is to keep the "freshness"' of the product. I think this is stupid. Improve your stock management and your products will be fresh. Besides, it is more a question of "good looking " items than eatable items. Our perception of it has to change also as a customer.

I 100% agree with you! It is so easy not to put any plastic so I really don't get why they keep doing it... In France, we have banned single-use plastic, but these kinds of things still exist 😠

I totally agree with you. Makes me mad every time I see it. But if we all start pointing this out to the staff (in a friendly way) every time we visit an ICA store, we might be able to create change.
