Drop in particulate pollution levels can increase life expectancy: EPIC report

Good news comes in all forms. Here’s one about decreasing pollution. A recent report has stated that reduction in pollution levels can actually increase life expectancy!

According to the “Air Quality Life Index'' 2024 published by the Energy Policy Institute at the University of Chicago (EPIC), India recorded a 19.3% (9 micrograms per cubic meter) drop in particulate pollution (PM 2.5) in 2022, as compared to 2021, thus increasing life expectancy by one year. Multiple districts of India recorded a decrease in PM 2.5 over the 2021-22 period. If the decline continues at the same rate in the coming years, life expectancy could increase by 1.2 years in the northern plains, said the report. ''The report clearly shows that even a modest reduction in air pollution levels could lead to increased life expectancy. Air pollution, even at low levels, significantly shortens lives and poses serious public health risks. He also added, “Our current national air quality standards fall short of protecting public health and must be revised in line with World Health Organisation guidelines. We have the tools and technologies to solve the air pollution crisis, what we need now is the political will to implement them,'' said Avinash Chanchal, Campaign Manager, Greenpeace India. We had better implemented the findings if we can expect to see increased expectancy

The earth should be protected. It's our mother and instead of pollution we should improve the earth so that it can take care of us.

This is the kind of science that should be referred to everytime a political leader says he/she is gonna lower the price on petrol and diesel "to help the people".
