Meteorological Institute explains phenomenon that occurred in Cartago

Heavy rains with gusts of wind affected the city of Cartago and surrounding areas this Saturday. Cars were trapped by flooding on the road, part of the roof of the José Rafael “Fello” Meza stadium fell off and there were flooding in homes and businesses.
The passage of an intertropical convergence zone that is close to the national territory along with high humidity and very warm morning temperatures was the cause. All this caused a cloud formation that unleashed heavy downpours with a storm over the Old Metropolis.
“Cartago, being an urban place with a lot of construction, has less runoff, which causes the waters to take longer to flow to the ground and, then, floods occur. These cloud developments not only cause heavy rain and intense gusts of wind, but also hail,” explained Rebeca Morera, meteorologist at the National Meteorological Institute (IMN) of Costa Rica.
