Transforming 1 Million Hectares for a Sustainable Future

Unilever is making significant strides in promoting sustainable farming practices through its ambitious goal of implementing regenerative agriculture across 1 million hectares by 2030. By collaborating with farmers and partners, Unilever aims to transform how its ingredients are grown, ensuring a positive impact on the environment. Currently, the company has 20 active regenerative agriculture projects covering 100,000 hectares, with plans to expand this to 350,000 hectares. Notably, its Nutrition business group is leading this initiative, targeting 650,000 hectares by 2027, which will account for roughly half of its land footprint in this sector.

The urgency of adopting regenerative agriculture practices is underscored by the environmental challenges associated with traditional farming methods. With agriculture contributing significantly to greenhouse gas emissions and water scarcity, Unilever recognizes the necessity for change not only for the planet's health but also for the resilience of its supply chain. By implementing practices such as cover cropping, crop rotation, and reducing synthetic fertilizers, Unilever is setting a strong precedent in the industry. These practices not only help sequester carbon and improve soil health but also enhance the sustainability of the food systems that support its products.

Unilever’s commitment to regenerative agriculture is further evidenced by its collaborative efforts with key partners, such as its alliance with PepsiCo in Iowa, which has successfully introduced cover crops on 35,000 hectares. By working together across shared supply chains, Unilever and its partners are able to amplify their impact and effectively scale projects. This collaborative approach is critical for achieving shared goals and fostering a widespread shift toward sustainable farming practices.

To ensure the success of these initiatives, Unilever emphasizes the importance of strong advocacy for supportive policies at both national and international levels. By engaging with key stakeholders in the industry, Unilever is actively pushing for the inclusion of agricultural practices in climate action plans, facilitating the transition to regenerative methods for farmers. Through these combined efforts, Unilever is not only working towards a more sustainable agricultural model but also building resilience within the food supply chain, ultimately contributing to a healthier planet and a more secure future for food production.
