UK Red List Adds New Bird Members, As Society Calls for More Protection of Marine Areas
Seabirds such as the Arctic Tern and Gull have been added to the list
18/11/2024 – Five types of seabirds are in danger in the United Kingdom. Among them are the Arctic Tern and the Gull. These species were recently included on the Red List of birds at risk of extinction, following alarming population declines. This information is part of a study published in the journal British Birds.
These birds are facing many challenges, such as climate change affecting their breeding areas and overfishing, which reduces their food sources. In addition, invasive species, such as rats, are attacking chicks, and bird flu has also contributed to the mortality of these birds.
