99% of deforestation in Brazil's Amazon is illegal. To fight this reality and give the people living in the Amazon other opportunities to make a living, the Brazilian NGO Projeto Saúde e Alegria/The Health and Happiness Project has been operating for 30 years to boost the economic activities of the people living in the rainforest. In the 1980s PSA was mainly focused on the health aspect and providing healthcare and sanitation to isolated communities. Today thanks to their work, communities can live healthily and legally make a living without destroying the forests, the NGO currently works with over 30,000 people and different projects such as training and financing in permaculture and agroecology or community-based tourism. "Active Forest" is a platform for socio-economic opportunities aimed at the sustainable management of the forest, making the best use of the Amazon’s potential for agroecological and forestry projects, These activities help to mitigate deforestation and CO2 emissions and, at the same time, promote food security, income increase and social inclusion of the involved communities. A win-win for the people and the forest! On top of that, the NGO is equipping off-grid communities with renewable energy, lack of access to electricity is often a roadblock to the socio-economic development of riverside residents.
