"No more hot air", the new Emissions Gap Report urges immediate action on emissions ahead of COP29

Released on October 24, the 2024 Emissions Gap Report warns that greenhouse gas emissions are at record highs, and the window for limiting global temperature rises is quickly closing. Without urgent, global-scale action, the world risks crossing the threshold of 1.5°C warming set by the 2015 Paris Agreement, leading to severe climate impacts.

UNEP Executive Director Inger Andersen highlighted the urgency, stating, "climate crunch time is here." To remain on track, the report reminds us that countries must cut emissions by 42% by 2030 and 57% by 2035. Without this effort, we are headed to a drastic 3.1°C increase in global temperatures, an outcome that would trigger even more climate disasters, from extreme heat waves and droughts to more frequent storms and floods.

The report is published as global leaders get ready for COP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan, and stresses that affordable clean energy solutions, like solar and wind power, could help bridge the emissions gap if supported by swift policy shifts and international collaboration. These technologies, along with measures like forest conservation, could reduce emissions by up to 52% by 2030.

However, UNEP warns that achieving these targets will require unprecedented global cooperation and commitment, particularly from G20 nations, which account for 80% of emissions especially as currently no countries are predicted to achieve their NDCs.

The next round of NDCs is the (maybe last?) opportunity for countries to demonstrate commitment to the highest standards of climate responsibility. Due by February 2025, each country’s NDC should be ambitious, science-based, and transparent, clearly showing how it reflects a fair share of the climate effort based on each country’s development level, historical emissions, and current global warming contributions.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres described the situation as "teetering on a planetary tightrope," urging global leaders to step up or face "climate disaster." You couldn't be more clear, let's see if they listen.

People of any country of this world, should never been seen as the only cause of any anti-environmental ad/or polluting action takers, their government, being able to take action to implement all the “good environmental conduct rules” in the school curriculum of all their school going children and also very deliberately introducing into the lives of all their citizens, to follow these rules by many conventional ways like TV, journalism, round the clock meetings, to get in the mind of the citizens, of all over the world, that THE OLD WORLD WITH ITS LIVING CONDITIONS AND WITH ALL KNOWN POSSIBILITIES IS ALREADY DEAD, WE MUST START LIVING ON NEW STANDARDS WITHOUT BEING BIASED BY OUR ANCESTRAL CULTURAL LIVING VIEWPOINTS AND STANDARDS, BUT WE MUST BE REBORN TO SAVE OUR HEALTH AND OUR LIVES, IF WE AS A NATION WANT TO EXIST ON THIS LAND IN THE COMING 10 TO 50 MORE YEARS, OTHERWISE WE WILL ALL PERISH AS A NATION VERY SOON !! Such a call for action and the response of these people which may achieve real wonders in any country of this world just now, would help also to lift the burden from the shoulders of the poor citizens anywhere on this planet, as the most or te less polluters, as until their leders decides to take action we may only say that “They didn’t know what they were doing! “.

I want to take your attention to something very important here, we use always words like climate, love, awareness, attention, green energy, renewable energy, clean energy, clean world, awareness of climate change, carbon footprint, natural resources, etc which are all very “soft words” like “soft drugs” not to put the people in big distress or panic situations, by explaining everything in such a way that, if we the humanity living on this 3/4 dead or dying planet as a very poor “endangered species”, we do still have all possible solutions and answers in our hands, being able to gripe in as the one and only “masters of the universe” to turn everything back to normal. Because we already are far beyond the point of no return, we should avert everyone correctly over the dangerous slide we are now all together experiencing into the unknown future of our planet and by doing this, try to open all eyes and minds for a completely new way of living, which, hopefully, by the common dangers we are facing, more and more each day, would call people into mutual understanding, friendship and negotiation of any possible peace to endorse a world wide solidarity, instead of trying to find out where we our next most destructive bom ‘s should throw to get our poor neighbour country on its knees. God forbid !

@ann_nyambura_542 our leaders are no more than human beings as we their people, we don’t know really in which direction all this world wide chaos goes and they alone could never be hold accountable for the big malaise the world is in now.

As we approach COP29, this report serves as a critical call to action for governments, businesses, and individuals to intensify their efforts in combating climate change.

They must take responsibility and lead the way in climate action. Without unprecedented cooperation, we are indeed headed for climate disaster

Well, so far I don't think the leadership towards averting this imminent disaster has failed. The warnings have born few fruits.

World leaders must be at the fore front in ensuring they put strict rules in place to end green house gas emissions and bridge this gap. They must also be ready to pronounce this statement in the coming COP 29 and moreso abide with it.

The UN COP 29 needs to pronounce ardent measures and restrictions.Green house gas emissions being on such a high is threatening to mankind and biodiversity in it's entirety.

Very impressive. It is a timely reminder of the need for immediate action to address emissions. As we approach COP29, it is important for governments and industries to prioritize concrete measures to reduce emissions and mitigate the impact of climate change.
