Cobalt-free batteries could power cars of the future

Traditional electric car batteries rely on problematic cobalt, with its environmental and economic downsides. MIT researchers have developed a promising alternative: an organic battery material that performs as well as cobalt batteries but is cheaper and more sustainable.
This organic material, made from readily available chemicals, boasts comparable conductivity, storage capacity, and even faster charging than cobalt batteries. Its secret lies in its layered structure and strong hydrogen bonds, making it stable and insoluble in electrolytes.
The researchers addressed durability concerns by adding fillers like cellulose and rubber, preventing cracks during charging and extending the battery's life. Additionally, this organic material could cost significantly less than cobalt batteries, potentially lowering the price of electric vehicles.
With Lamborghini already interested in the technology, the future looks bright for organic batteries. Dincă's lab continues to explore further improvements, including using even more abundant elements like sodium or magnesium in place of lithium. This research holds immense promise for a cleaner and more affordable electric car future.

it seems from the news that TAQ can become a organic alternative to cobalt free battery. The technology is patented. Upscaling shall help the process.
