Always asking for origin of meat in restaurants

Always asking for origin of meat in restaurants

Besides in my own household I also do what I can to make concious choices when eating out. I am a omnivore, flexitarian and food waste upcyclist (minimizing food waste has a more positive climate impact than switching to vegetarian/vegan and wasting food on avreage). When I eat meat I always ask for the origin of the meat. Being Swedish and knowing a bit about how the industry looks and operates, i now Swedish meats has a really low carbon, water, pesticide and abtibiotic footprint, in general. And knowing the huge variation in size of ones ecological, environmental, social etc and climate footprint based on it's origin and ways of production and handelling, from farm to fork the choice to go Swedish is really easy. Today when asking at a random Japaneese restaurant in Stockholm where I had lunch, their yakiniku was beef from Brazil (most likely leading to the Amazon forest being cut down for cattle ranch) and the sweet-and-sour chicken was Danish (probably less bad but still extreme degenerative and socially and environmentally destructive). So I went for the less bad, still not very sustainable vegetable gyosa (dumplings). I told the waitress my reasons and asked them to consider switching to Swedish beef and boast bout it to attract more customers. You don't ask, you don't get! If they still serve Brazilian meet and non-domestic/Swedish shortly I will post a climate warning/idea and name them the next time. #ChangeAgent #ActOnClimate #BoycottBrazilianMeat #foodsystem #unsustainablefood

I eat vegan, are there any other foods orn things from Brazil that I should consider boycotting?

I am mot sure I am have indepth knowledge of Brazil but since its extra common among vegans with soy and its a major Brazilian crop that are being farmed with large amounts of pesticides etc. Most often this is monocultures where forest/rainforest are being cleared to create farmland. This should rule it out, to instead use other more national varieties of healthy and protein-rich legumes etc, that has been farmed for a longer period (at least decades preferably centuries, in your home country. Heritage organic seeds is the best if you ask me. Where do you live?

Thanks David for a good question. Since I have practical background from Swedish farming I would say that most meat coming from Swedish animals are breed in a good way and the feed they eat is normally 90-100 % Swedish grown. Therefore you can eat Swedish meat with good appetite👍🇸🇪

I so totally agree and have pledged to do this myself. Let me ask you: what meat would you say is OK for someone living in Sweden? Is there any OK importerad meat?

David, Thanks for the comment and pledge to join, that makes me feel good! I'd say it's really hard to answer since it depend on so many aspects: ethics (considering you are ok with eating meat, then what can I assume or know about the conditions for the animal life before slaughter and the slaughter process as such), social, environment, climate. So to begin with: We have to take a best guess-approach. 99 percent of people don't know for sure because we mostly eat anonymous industry meat (not necessarily bad). We have to realise that we live with a imperfect food system, lackning a lot of information, at every time We make decision regarding food. Because it is a huge and complex system. How was the farm life pre-slaughter, what were the main sources of itseed, and from what origin etc did it come from, what were the social circumstances, etc? Basically, there are a lot of ifs and buts. But in Sweden I'd say & red meat = grassfed and specifically Hälsingestintan ("ethical meat"')
