On July 16th, the "Village of Water" opened near Melle in the Deux-Sèvres region, welcoming over 2,000 European activists. This temporary settlement, established by the collective Les Soulèvements de la Terre, has attracted participants from Italy, Switzerland, Germany, and Spain, all united in their opposition to mega-reservoirs, or "mega-bassines." Despite significant opposition and legal challenges, the French government remains committed to constructing new mega-reservoirs, primarily benefiting a small group of industrial farmers at the expense of sustainable practices. Criticism has come from various quarters, including the Cour des Comptes, which argues that these projects delay essential agricultural reforms. Recent victories for the anti-reservoir movement include halting several projects and deeming others illegal. The fight against mega-reservoirs, or "mega-bassines," has gained international attention. "This fight resonates with various crises across Europe, touching on water, agriculture, and biodiversity" said Julien Le Guet, spokesperson for the movement "Bassines non merci."
The "Village of Water" is expected to host over 5,000 people throughout the week, culminating in large-scale demonstrations in Saint-Sauvant on July 19th and in the port of La Rochelle on July 20th.
Activists call for a moratorium on new reservoir constructions and advocate for agroecological practices to protect water as a common good. They argue that stopping these projects in France could set a precedent for other regions. The gathering at the "Village of Water" is seen as a crucial moment for social and environmental movements to unite and demonstrate resilience, aiming to safeguard water resources.
