In a bit more than two months a million football fans will travel to Qatar for one of the most significant sporting events on Earth: The FIFA World Cup. And the event already sounds like a climate nightmare. We've all heard of the air-conditioned stadiums, built especially for the event with a complete lack of respect for human rights. But did you know that Qatar will install docked cruise ships to host the audience in the absence of enough hotels? But despite these obvious issues, FIFA claims this month-long event will be carbon neutral. How can they say that? Thanks to carbon offset credits. Carbon Market Watch a not-for-profit organisation which works closely with the European Union disagrees with the statement. It has examined the organisers’ plans and says projected emissions have likely been underreported, with the footprint created from building seven new stadiums that won't be used in the future of particular concern. "Despite a lack of transparency, the evidence suggests that the emissions from this World Cup will be considerably higher than expected by the organisers, and the carbon credits being purchased to offset these emissions are unlikely to have a sufficiently positive impact on the climate". I recommend you to listen to this episode of How to Save a planet which I found very informative on the topic and carbon offsetting in general and gave me even more reasons to not watch the World Cup: https://open.spotify.com/episode/6Msfjv021Y6S3Usa1ZupZW?si=0f37f482dac248d8 There is also a good article from The Guardian: https://www.theguardian.com/football/2022/may/31/qatar-world-cup-criticised-for-problematic-carbon-footprint-promises

It has been proved that this event will cause more damage to the environment. The leaders are not responsible at all.

Definitely not!

I can imagine of the carbon neutral lie that's in the plan, it's very contrary to what we expected.FIFA is an optimum channel to address climate change but has rather opted to greenwash ⚠️

This world cup is really the worst: for human rights and for the planet!

Imagine if FIFA started to use its immense power for the common good. What a great impact the organization could have. Instead this corruption-driven machine is deliberately making things worse.

FIFA should try their best to use the world cup events to raise as much awareness as possible on matters of climate change and they should try their best to cut emissions...
