Tony Elumelu, one of the wealthiest individuals in Nigeria and Africa, has launched a $3.5 million green entrepreneurship program aimed at addressing the climate crisis in Africa. The program will train, mentor, fund, and coach 120 young African entrepreneurs with businesses in high-impact green sectors, focusing on Kenya in the initial phase. The Tony Elumelu Foundation partnered with the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF), Generation Unlimited, and IKEA Foundation to establish the program. The initiative seeks to create new jobs, improve livelihoods, eradicate poverty, and address African climate issues.
Elumelu's decision to start the program in Kenya is informed by the fact that East Africa is currently experiencing its longest-running drought in 40 years, affecting 36 million people across Ethiopia, Kenya, and Somalia. While Nigeria is also experiencing the effects of climate change, such as flooding and wind erosion, the program is starting in Kenya before expanding to other African countries. The program aims to empower young entrepreneurs in Africa with entrepreneurial skills that are required to accelerate the shift towards a green economy.
Elumelu has emphasized the critical role that green entrepreneurship and agri-entrepreneurship play in driving innovative solutions to environmental problems. He is keen to empower African youth, starting with Kenya, to deploy innovative solutions to the climate crisis. The program is expected to create viable green jobs so that Africa's youth are not left behind in the inevitable transition to a green economy.
The Tony Elumelu Foundation is committed to strengthening climate resilience in Africa, starting with East Africa, and scaling up to the rest of the continent to mitigate the effects of the climate crisis. This program is a significant step towards building sustainable businesses that generate viable green jobs and promote climate resilience in Africa. It is hoped that this initiative will enable African youth to harness their potential and contribute to a greener, more sustainable future for the continent.
