After almost three years, the Colombian Congress finally approved the bill that allows the country to ratify the EscazĂş Agreement, a treaty signed between several Latin American and Caribbean countries that seeks to protect the environment and human rights. The EscazĂş agreement's main objectives are the rights of access to environmental information, public participation in environmental decision-making processes, and access to environmental justice. Most significantly, the Agreement requires governments to prevent and investigate attacks against environmental defenders. With 322 people killed between 2012 and 2021, Colombia is the second deadliest country for environmental defenders (right behind Brazil). Ratifying this text has been pointed out by many as a key decision for the new government to ensure that Colombia manages to protect defenders of the environment in the country. 24 countries have signed the treaty and 12 have ratified it, let's hope that more will follow! https://www.globalwitness.org/en/campaigns/environmental-activists/decade-defiance/#decade-killings-global https://elpais.com/america-futura/2022-10-11/tras-dos-anos-de-obstaculos-colombia-aprueba-ratificar-acuerdo-de-escazu.html https://www.elespectador.com/ambiente/amazonas/colombia-aprobo-el-acuerdo-de-escazu-como-va-a-implementarse/

Awesome! This will see more people freely express themselves in the country better than before now that the right for protection is enshrined in the agreement.
