Waggeryd Cell has been fighting against high electricity prices. Now they belong to the winners as the company emits less and less carbon dioxide - and receives a surplus worth many millions.
- We work more and more with sustainable solutions for the sake of our environment. This is a receipt that we succeeded, says CEO Thomas Sandstedt.
It is the news site Newsworthy that reports that the Vaggeryds company used just under half of its free emission rights in 2022, which is a surplus worth around 710,000 euros, equivalent to almost eight million kroner today.
The price of emission rights also reached new record highs in 2022, on average one tonne of carbon dioxide equivalents was auctioned for 79 euros. Five years ago it was six euros. It entailed greater costs for companies that need to buy emission rights to cover their emissions and one such is Waggeryd Cell.
The company is known for producing bleached chemical thermomechanical pulp (BCTMP) and is part of the ATA Timber group.
Waggeryd Cell was awarded emission rights for just over 17,000 tonnes of greenhouse gases in 2022, but released just over 8,000 tonnes, according to the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency. This means that the company is the one in Jönköping County that received the most unused emission allowances over last year.
