Post 853: Nobel Prize Day. The Nobel Prize awards those who have changed the world in economics, literature, or another field - and this year, one of those prizes went to 3 scientists that helped establish the concept of human-caused climate change. . Syukuro Manabe, Klaus Hasselmann, and Giorgio Parisi were all recognized for their decades-worth of independent research earlier this fall. Together, they created the scientific foundation that climate scientists now build on - better understanding how we cause and how we can fix our warming world. In the 1960s, Manabe led research that paired rising levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere to rising temperatures on Earth's surface; In the 1970s, Hasselmann created a mathematical model that connected weather and climate; and around 1980, Parisi helped further the understanding of complex physical systems by recognizing hidden patterns between them (anything between an atom to a planet). . While we are still many years away from solving the climate crisis, without these scientists, we may have never even realized there was an issue. Climate models that we rely on today would not be possible - we would be flying blind into an unprecedented era of warming. Acknowledging the importance of their warnings is a crucial first step - now we just have to take them to heart and change for the better. . .
