As spring comes earlier, many migrating birds are struggling to keep up

As the climate gets warmer, leaves and blooms are popping out ahead of schedule. For migrating birds, this means the food or fuel that they need on the journey of migration is coming out earlier, such as leaves, flowers, and insects. If they miss the peak period of “Spring green-up”, there won’t be enough for them. “Every day during migration, they’re just on this trade-off between starving to death and being able to continue forward,” says Morgan Tingley, an ornithologist at UCLA. “When they’re not flying, they’re mostly voraciously eating.” The mismatch between the current spring green-up and many species’ migration habits is causing huge food problems for them, especially for the long-distance migrants, such as vireos and warblers that winter in Central or South America. Their calendar possibly relies on the daylight changing instead of temperature. Birds need the same resources we do in order to survive and thrive. Birds need a healthy environment, the right food, clean air, and clean water. When birds don’t have what they need, we don’t, either. It's heartbreaking to see how climate change is affecting migrating birds, disrupting their natural rhythms and putting their survival at risk.
