Form Energy secures $405M to speed development of long-awaited 100-hour battery

Form Energy's latest achievement marks a significant advancement in the renewable energy sector. The company, known for its pioneering iron-air battery technology, recently secured $405 million in funding, propelling its efforts to revolutionize energy storage. This substantial investment, led by T. Rowe Price and supported by GE Vernova and several venture capital firms, is a crucial step toward transitioning away from fossil fuels and enhancing the reliability of renewable energy sources.

By scaling up manufacturing at its Weirton, West Virginia factory and accelerating research and development, Form Energy is positioned to transform the energy landscape. Traditional lithium batteries provide storage for just a few hours, limiting their effectiveness when the sun isn’t shining or the wind isn’t blowing. In contrast, Form Energy's iron-air batteries can store energy for up to 100 hours, enabling a stable supply of clean power over several days. This capacity to store and release energy over extended periods is vital for reducing carbon emissions and stabilizing power grids reliant on intermittent renewable sources.

Iron, one of Earth’s most abundant elements, is central to the affordability and scalability of Form Energy's technology. With its lower environmental footprint compared to other battery materials, this innovation represents a sustainable and economically viable solution for large-scale energy storage.

The funding also supports ongoing projects across the United States, including collaborations with Great River Energy in Minnesota and initiatives in Colorado, California, New York, Georgia, and Virginia. These projects are set to come online in the next few years, with the first commercial installation expected in 2025.

By scaling this groundbreaking technology, Form Energy is not just contributing to the energy transition—it's accelerating it. This milestone underscores the potential for renewable energy sources to replace fossil fuels and provides a glimpse into a future where a cleaner, more resilient grid is within reach.
