U.S. Government Shortens Indigenous-Proposed Marine Sanctuary to Make Way for Offshore Wind

The Chumash people, a Native American Tribe with a history along the California coast spanning thousands of years, have seen their ancestral lands and populations greatly impacted since the arrival of Europeans in 1769. Today, they seek to establish the Chumash Heritage National Marine Sanctuary, which would encompass an offshore area of 5,617 square miles as part of the America the Beautiful Initiative. However, the proposed sanctuary by the Biden administration excludes the section of the coast the Tribe has advocated protecting for over five decades, intending it for offshore wind development, leading to feelings of betrayal among the Chumash people. They believe that offshore wind, while not opposed in principle, must be pursued responsibly and with their active involvement in the decision-making process to ensure it does not harm marine ecosystems. The deadline for influencing NOAA's decision on the sanctuary's size and management is October 25, with the outcome having implications for marine life conservation, Indigenous stewardship, and the potential for deep-sea mining and oil drilling in the region.

They need to work around a way in which they don't destroy one thing whilst getting the other thing done. Both are equally important.

It is disappointing to see the U.S. government prioritize offshore wind development over the protection of Indigenous proposed marine sanctuaries. It is important to consider the long-term environmental and cultural impacts of such decisions.
