Sharks and rays near Cocos Island migrate to deeper waters due to climate change

Climate change has warmed the marine surface waters near Cocos Island and the amount of oxygen has reduced, conditions that force sharks and rays to seek deeper waters to survive. This is one of the conclusions of a research by the Research Center for Marine Sciences and Limnology (Cimar) of the University of Costa Rica (UCR).
Between 2010 and 2019, Cimar researchers partnered with the tourism company Undersea Hunter Group, which facilitated dives up to 400 meters deep aboard the DeepSee submarine.
“This is a unique study, we rarely have such extensive time series and, furthermore, in deep waters. Most studies that have assessed the status of shark and ray populations around the world are relatively short or have focused on shallow, coastal environments (less than 40 m). We did not have valuable information about what happens in deeper regions,” commented Fabio Quesada Pérez, one of the researchers.
