Women added to Cop29 climate summit committee after backlash

The president of Azerbaijan,Ilham Aliyev has added 12 women to the previously all-male organising committee selected for COP29 global climate summit after a backlash from environmental enthusiast. The committee that is set to organize the international conference to be held in Arzabeijan in December comprised 28 men which climate change campaigners termed as retrogressive. President Ilham Aliyev also added a man to the committee, which now comprises 29 men and 12 women. Among the women added are Umayra Taghiyeva, the deputy minister of ecology and natural resources, the human rights commissioner, Sabina Aliyeva, and Bahar Muradova, the chair of the state committee on family, women and children’s problems. However more calls to add more women and create a balance are still on. “This is positive progress but we are still far from a 50:50 gender balance,” said Elise Buckle, Women added to Cop29 climate summit committee after backlashco-founder of She Changes Climate. “This is a quick fix but not enough.” In as much as this is a good approach I agree with Elise Buckle that more women should be incorporated in this committee and treated as a priority on matters climate action now and in the future. The addition of 12 women to the organizing committee of COP29 by the President of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, in response to criticism highlights the importance of gender inclusivity in addressing climate change. The initial all-male composition had sparked backlash from environmental enthusiasts, emphasizing the need for diverse perspectives in climate decision-making. This adjustment reflects a recognition of the role women play in climate action and the importance of inclusivity for effective and comprehensive solutions in the fight against climate change.

Not enough though! And also, he shouldn't receive climate love, organisations pushing for this to happen should. He was the one deciding at the beginning to name ZERO women in the committee.

We are all quick to call the environment "MOTHER NATURE" but still find it had to include the most nurturing beings on the planet in discussions about climate change. Ironical, right? I would even advocate for more women than men in that forum.
