The number of packages ordered online has increased significantly since the COVID pandemic. I see Amazon packages being delivered to neighbors almost on a daily basis!
This has caused environmental, economical, and social issues due to for example a lot more packaging, greenhouse gas emissions, noise, and air pollution.
As the last mile of package delivery is the most inefficient part of delivery, it is important to make this part more sustainable. Last mile logistics involves the delivery to the customer's home.
The last mile is inefficient due to short routes, low driving speeds, long vehicle down-times, labor intensive, and limited traffic infrastructure.
To make package delivery more sustainable, several improvements can be put into practice. These improvements are explained here:
