Spain has launched the biggest CSP plant in Europe, which is aimed at self-consumption.
Heineken Spain and Engie España have jointly inaugurated Europe's largest industrial CSP facility in Seville, Spain. The €21 million ($21.9 million) project was co-financed with FEDER funds and managed by the Institute for Energy Diversification and Saving (IDAE). The plant spans 8 hectares and has a storage capacity of 68 MWh, which will help reduce Heineken's factory fossil gas consumption by over 60%. The project integrates thermodynamic concepts and CSP technology in an industrial facility, which doubles the production capacity of superheated water for industrial use, enhancing energy reliability and availability. The plant uses water as a heat transfer medium, eliminating the need for synthetic oils that could pose environmental risks. The plant's construction took 12 months, nearly twice the originally estimated time frame. The partnership between Heineken and Engie operates under a Thermal Purchase Agreement (TPA) framework, with Heineken responsible for energy consumption and Engie committed to delivering fully renewable energy at a predetermined rate. Ownership of the solar thermal plant will transfer to Heineken after the agreement's 20-year term expiration.

This is a significant milestone in the transition to renewable energy sources in Europe. The plant's storage capacity and production capacity of superheated water for industrial use will help reduce carbon emissions and enhance energy reliability and availability. It is great to see the private sector contributing to the fight against climate change.
And together we've planted over 150,000 trees. One tree is planted for every climate review written to an organization that is Open for Climate Dialogue™.
