Nature Restoration Law

Let’s put things straight about the Nature Restoration Law:
By: Virginijus Sinkevičius, European Commissioner for Environment, Oceans and Fisheries at European Commission
🌿1️⃣ Restoration gives Nature a chance to be the vital force we need for our future and economies.
This law responds to science’s alarming calls, seen in IPCC’s latest report, and peoples' demands to bring Nature back.

🌍2️⃣ This is our Climate Law for biodiversity.
There will be no climate neutrality without restored ecosystems.
Climate change and biodiversity loss are one: we'll either win or fail in both.
If we want to achieve our climate goals, there's no magic solution: we need Nature.

💼3️⃣ Businesses support us: restoration doesn’t mean stopping economic activities!

More than 50% of global GDP depends on biodiversity.

Insurance companies have invested EUR 510 billion in companies with high dependency on ecosystem services.

Our economy is in Nature's hands.

🍎4️⃣ Restoring Nature doesn’t threaten food security, it futureproofs it!
70% of soils,1/3 of #EUPollinators and 30% of groundwater are under pressure.
Despite the myths, the benefits for farmers are many:
Fertile soils, less impacts from droughts, water retention, pollination.

⚡️5️⃣ Nature and energy: they don’t compete, they can foster each other.
Deploying renewables goes hand in hand with restoration.
That’s why we listen to business attentively:
Major renewables producers support & talk publicly in favour of our proposal.

🍃6️⃣ The EU led the #COP15 negotiations for a global deal of Nature.
We need this law to fulfil our own commitments on this landmark agreement & walk the talk, as our international credibility is at stake.
This starts here, at home, by restoring & protecting our ecosystems.

🏙️7️⃣ Finally, our Nature Restoration Law will create greener cities.

For the 40% of Europeans that live in cities we want:

Clean air, cooler summers with less extreme temperatures, green spaces where children can play.

This Law will be our legacy for the next generations.

A very important law which should be adopted immediately in Europe and other states to practice it too.
