Iberdrola will build a solar farm in Santiago do Cacém in Portugal. It will have an installed capacity of 1,200 MW. According to Iberdrola, it will be able to generate enough energy to cover the needs of around 430,000 homes — equivalent to a population twice the size of Porto.
Also, worth noticing, the land where the facility will be built will also work as a space for sheep grazing 🐑 and beehive introduction 🐝, while indigenous tree species will be planted in the surrounding area. This project will also lead to the creation of 2,500 jobs.
“This solar farm sets a new benchmark in combining Europe’s clean energy ambitions with the delivery of tangible environmental and social benefits. We need to reduce our exposure to fossil fuels,” Iberdrola’s Executive Chairman, Ignacio Galán, said.
Iberdrola plans to invest an additional €3 billion in wind and solar power in Portugal over the coming years, facilitated by the country’s favorable regulations on the deployment of green energy. The company has already completed 3 solar farms in Portugal and will start constructing 3 more in 2023.
These are greatly needed initiatives to help Europe transition to renewable energy and reduce its dependence on fossil fuels!

As it chiefly relies on the sun, the primary way solar energy positively impacts the environment is that it reduces carbon emissions and greenhouse gases. Unlike fossil fuels.

We are happy to see the focus in Portugal on renewable energy - also not forget the promising wave energy projects in the mix🌊! Portugal being the origin for the global Ocean Community, makes us extra happy to see actors such as Iberdrola pushing forward in the right (only) direction 💙🇵🇹
