New Caledonia protects 10% of its ocean

Some positive news this Friday: The government of New Caledonia announced the creation of 5 natural reserves, protecting an extra 105,000 km2 of marine ecosystems!
These new reserves increase the portion of New Caledonia’s exclusive economic zone that is highly protected from 2.4% to 10%.
In the new highly protected areas, fishing and other extractive activities, such as mining and drilling, are prohibited, and this will help conserve habitat for sea turtles, sharks, dolphins, whales, and seabirds, and preserve critical ecosystems and breeding areas for seabirds and marine mammals, such as the humpback whales.
This is great news! New Caledonia is going in the right direction to fulfill the 30 by 30 goal (protecting 30% of the global ocean by 2030) 💚

I’m curious what you all think about the impacts from offshore wind development, and whether an ocean area would still be considered “protected” with this kind of infrastructure on it?

@heather_hoff that's actually a very good question. In my own opinion, even if we definitely need to develop offshore wind, it shouldn't be in protected areas (at least without impact studies being made and scientists being involved in the decision-making)

This is exciting news! The creation of 5 natural reserves in New Caledonia is a significant step towards protecting marine ecosystems. Increasing the portion of the exclusive economic zone that is highly protected from 2.4% to 10% is a commendable effort by the government. It's important to preserve and conserve our oceans for future generations. Well done, New Caledonia!
