Retail that Revitalizes Environment and Community

In an area transitioning from coal mining, environmental restoration was needed to counteract the damage caused by decades of colliery waste products. At the same time, residents needed economic opportunities to thrive. Enter: Dalton Park Outlet & Outdoors, the largest outlet shopping destination in the northeast of England. It focuses on rehabilitating the environment and offers job-skills training and employment opportunities to the community.

More than 600,000 cubic meters (785,000 cubic yards) of coal mining waste were excavated during construction of the shopping center. Builders moved the waste across the road to create a parkland with hills and valleys that support multiple ecosystems. Recycled organic waste enriched the colliery shale, so colonies of woodlands, wetlands, and wildflower meadows could be established.

@dickson_mutai It really shows that sustainability is possible and not just a utopian dream that cannot be achieved while still being profitable. More organizations should take up such models

a forward-thinking approach to commerce, where businesses are not just profit-driven but purpose-driven, actively giving back to the environment and the local area.

@frankoh_kihm_080 It is a big part of what determines a business's Corporate Social Responsibility goals and helps it grow itself and grow the planet too.

Reclaiming degraded land is a perfect way of mitigating the fatal effects brought about by climate change.

@rosebellendiritu I agree. With a lot of land having been useful before but now degraded, it's only logical to want to return such areas to their former earth serving glory. Way to go really

This is a great initiative. Focusing on environmental restoration not only addresses past damages but also creates opportunities for sustainable development and improved quality of life for residents.

This is great rehabilitation of an environment that has severely been degraded after years of coal mining.

@Kevin And we don't want to come back ten years down the line and start rehabilitation of land ruined by coal then, that's why we're against it's mining and have to stop coal worldwide.
