‘Worthless’: Chevron’s carbon offsets are mostly junk and some may harm, research says

A carbon offset is characterized as having low environmental integrity, or being worthless, if it is linked to a forest or plantation or green energy project, including those involving hydroelectric dams, that doesn’t lead to additional greenhouse gas reductions, exaggerates benefits or risks emitting emissions, among other measures.

The cited report is biased against our industry and paints an incomplete picture of Chevron’s efforts to advance a lower carbon future. Chevron supports offsets as part of that effort and views them as an important market-based approach to efficient carbon reductions. The majority of the offsets referred to in the report are compliance-grade offsets accepted by governments in the regions where we operate. Chevron’s recently published Corporate Sustainability Report and latest Climate Change Resilience Report offer a more complete view of the many ways we are working constructively to offer solutions for a lower carbon future. @Chevron I would be happy to see evidence to support your claim. Some lines of marketing text won't make me trust you suddenly. 🫤

If carbon offset projects are not additional and permanent, they can actually make climate change worse rather than reducing emissions.
