The first hydrogen-powered hospital in Europe will soon be in Elst Netherlands
It will be the first hospital in Europe to obtain its energy entirely from hydrogen. And they are quite proud of that at the Rijnstate hospital. In a year's time, the first visitors should be able to enter the new location in Elst between Arnhem and Nijmegen. How special is a hospital that runs on hydrogen? On the day of construction, people could already come and have a look.
Initially, there is no indication that a special building will appear in Elst. But for those who look closely, there are still some striking details to be found. The huge hydrogen tank is already ready. "That is built in by the specialist," says Ilse Bakker of construction group Berghege Heerkens. "We focus on the building itself."
'No boarded up bunker'
It will be a building that is of course different from other buildings. The insulation must be of high quality, the energy must be extremely reliable. And of course we don't want a boarded-up bunker, the hospital must feel pleasant with lots of light and space. According to Ilse Bakker, this is also happening: "This hospital will also be pleasant to stay in with all the comfort you want. Sufficient windows and open spaces. And ready for the future."
Opportunity
Many people consider it a great opportunity to come and see what the new hospital will look like today. They think it's great, including the hydrogen tank facility, says an enthusiastic Elstenaar, who has already taken three hundred photos of the construction. "I think it's great that they are going to try that and that it will work in the future." A fellow townsman has followed it all from the start: "We have been fully involved in the construction since the pile driving. It will be beautiful. We are happy with it. We just hope we don't have to use it."
