Study finds increased threat to coastal plants from combination of plastic pollution and flooding
Scientists find that both microplastics and flooding alone cause harm to plants
31/10/2024 – Recent research reveals that two of the most critical environmental stressors—microplastic pollution and seawater flooding—can significantly alter plant growth and reproduction in coastal areas around the world. Published in the journal Environmental Pollution, the study is one of the first to examine the combined effects of these two factors on coastal plants.
Scientists found that both microplastics and flooding alone cause harm to plants. While microplastics negatively affect reproduction in the species tested, flooding results in greater plant tissue death. However, when plants are exposed to both stressors simultaneously, the impact is even more severe, altering growth and temporarily suppressing the plants’ photosynthetic efficiency.
