The Biden administration has granted approval for the construction of up to 176 large wind turbines off the coast of Virginia, marking a significant milestone in the development of the Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind (CVOW) project led by Dominion Energy. This ambitious venture is poised to become the largest offshore wind farm in the United States.
The future wind farm will be situated approximately 23.5 nautical miles off the shores of Virginia Beach and is expected to produce around 2,600 megawatts of offshore wind energy. This substantial capacity will be sufficient to power over 900,000 households, as confirmed by the U.S. Department of the Interior.
Each of the 176 wind turbines in the CVOW project will boast an impressive capacity of 14.7 megawatts. The aim is to address the climate crisis, reduce energy costs, and create well-paying union jobs across various sectors, including manufacturing, shipbuilding, and construction.
The administration has set a target of achieving 30 gigawatts of offshore wind energy capacity by the year 2030. The project is anticipated to generate approximately 900 jobs per year during the initial construction phase, with this number expected to increase to around 1,100 jobs annually once operations commence.
The approval of this significant offshore wind project is the culmination of diligent efforts by the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) team. Their ongoing consultations with Tribes, federal agencies, state and local authorities, industry representatives, and ocean users have played a crucial role in shaping this project. The objective is to ensure the responsible development of this vital clean energy resource, thereby securing a sustainable future for generations to come.
In response to the potential impact on commercial and recreational fisheries, Dominion Energy has committed to establishing fishery mitigation funds. These funds will serve as compensation for losses directly resulting from the project. Additionally, Dominion Energy has agreed to implement construction clearance zones, vessel speed restrictions, and other measures to minimize the project's potential impact on protected species such as marine mammals, Atlantic sturgeon, and sea turtles.
This momentous approval is a significant step forward in the responsible development of a clean energy resource that promises to secure a sustainable future for generations to come.
