According to a recent report, Malaysia is targeting a 31% increase in renewable energy capacity by 2025

The Malaysian government has set ambitious targets to increase the country's renewable energy capacity to 31% by 2025 and 40% by 2035. According to the National Energy Policy, the goal is to reach an 18.4 GW renewable capacity by 2040. Currently, renewables account for 13.3% of Malaysia's total energy capacity, and projections suggest the country could reach 18.2% by 2025 and 36.4% by 2035.
The report highlights Malaysia's significant untapped renewable energy potential, particularly in solar PV, bio-power, and small hydro. The government has introduced various incentives and programs, such as the Large-Scale Solar (LSS) program and the Net Energy Metering (NEM) scheme, to drive the growth of grid-connected and distributed renewable energy systems. Additionally, tax incentives and exemptions have been extended to prioritize green energy investments.
The Malaysian government's focus on renewable energy is a practical approach to address the country's growing energy demands and climate change concerns. Sustained policy support and continued investment in renewable technologies will be important for Malaysia to achieve its renewable energy goals and transition towards a more sustainable energy future.
