The relation between the banking and fossil fuel industries is complex and closely intertwined. Banks provide loans, investments, and other services to fossil fuel companies, and in turn, fossil fuel companies rely on banks to finance their operations and growth. Banks are also exposed to potential risks associated with the extractive industries (environmental and reputational risks, for example) and have a duty to ensure their investments are in line with their values and fiduciary responsibility. There is a growing global movement to hold banks and other financial institutions accountable for their financing of fossil fuel projects and companies, and to encourage responsible banking practices.
