Uganda extends oil exploration licence for Nigeria's Oranto by two years

Oranto Petroleum Limited, a Nigerian company, has been granted a two-year extension of its oil exploration licence by Uganda's oil ministry. This renewal applies to two blocks in the western region of the country, specifically the Ngassa Deep and Ngassa Shallow exploration areas. With this extension, Oranto Petroleum Limited will have the opportunity to engage in exploration and appraisal drilling activities. The ministry made this announcement in a statement released on Friday evening.

The extension of Oranto Petroleum Limited's oil exploration license in Uganda, particularly in the Ngassa Deep and Ngassa Shallow exploration areas, raises questions about its implications for the fight against climate change. Oil exploration and extraction are known to contribute to environmental degradation and increased carbon emissions, which is contrary to global efforts to transition towards cleaner and more sustainable energy sources.
