Day 633: April 3rd, 2021. Carbon credits have helped get many companies to 'carbon-neutral' status, but they are viewed as a cop-out by many conservationists. It's easier for large companies to pay to become sustainable, without the need to make lasting changes in the way the business runs. . But now, companies can do something similar with 'plastic credits'. For X amount, companies can buy credits that fund plastic removal from the ocean or other ecosystem by a third party. The credits could open the door as a way to fund pollution reduction projects around the world that don't have the infrastructure they need, but it could also become a non-solution. If a large company buys 1,000 plastic bottles-worth of plastic credits, but then produces 1,000 plastic bottles, they are technically plastic-neutral. Carbon credits became standardized with the 1997 Kyoto Protocol, but plastic credits are somewhat of a 'Wild West' scenario. Hopefully as more companies move towards this type of solution, it will become standardized - but more importantly, hopefully companies will instead look towards reducing their plastic waste. . .
