Green nuggets: KFC starts selling plant-based "chicken" nationwide
Animal production accounts for 15% of the world's GHG emissions, and chicken meat accounts for about 24 percent of the global meat production. Chicken is usually known as a "more climate-friendly" meat, but the consumption continues to increase while, for instance, the consumption of beef declines. Also worth noting is that GHG emissions from a serving of chicken are 11 times higher than those for one serving of beans. Besides climate impacts, we are all aware of the ethical issues of the industry.
KFC has brought plant-based chicken to restaurants nationwide (after 2 years of testing), contributing to changing the face of the fast food industry with new meat alternative products. The fried chicken chain worked with Beyond Meat to create a chicken breast alternative designed to mimic the consistency of ground chicken. As high profile food chains starts offering more plant based food, we are likely to see more businesses join the trend.
