Committing to only sell electric cars by 2030

Volvo has announced a commitment to only sell electric cars by 2030. This falls in line with what we've heard from them in earlier climate reviews, speaking about the death of the internal combustion engine (ICE). It's part way goal to have 50% of global sales be electric cars to 2025 is quite ambitious and if they can achieve this they really do deserve praise. Let's follow Volvos journey of electrification and give them feedback on the way. I'd like to ask Volvo fill us in on the details regarding their plans of phasing out ICE cars. For instance, do you have any ICE cars being designed today? If yes, are you cancelling those plans? Hi Victor, We will reveal new cars with internal combustion engines. Countries and infrastructures are transitioning alongside the car industry to enable all people to live with fully electric cars, but we are not quite there yet. Some of our next generation cars will therefore feature high voltage hybrids alongside the fully electric versions. By 2025 half of our cars will be fully electric, with the remaining half being hybrids. By 2030, we intend to only sell fully electric cars .

We should further ensure the electric battery supply chain is sustainably sourced and ensure the rare earth raw matetials protect the people and ecosystems.

Agreed that this doesn't seem very fast but equally, this is a global operation that takes time to turn around, like all big ships. They just should have started turning before this year. The interesting element is that they will go online only for sales. I'm not sure exactly how this is going to work given that people really need to test out a car before they buy it - you wouldn't buy a car from Amazon, or maybe you would in the future?

Very late. The market for ICE will die before 2025. Electric cars will be better and cheaper! It is like having Nokia CEO telling everyone that they will only sell smart-phones, 10 years after iPhone was launched. Guess what. Nokia doesn't sell any phones today 10 years after!

Ah I´m not up to speed on the rate of change then, I thought this was quite fast. Doing a bit more digging it seems to be on par or a bit quicker than the competition. I´m with you that in absolute terms, this should have happened yesterday and not in 4-5 years time though. https://www.businessinsider.com/promises-carmakers-have-made-about-their-future-electric-vehicles-2020-1?op=1&r=US&IR=T#ford-4

@victor_erik_ramos It is good to pledge, and it is better than many other ICE car makers. But the business reality is that EV cars will be cheaper to manufacture than ICE cars in only 3-5 years. The market for ICE cars will not exist in 2030. Maybe for museum cars. Car-makers can pledge whatever but if they don't change very very fast and jump onto the EV train they will get out of business! Volvo Cars needs to do more or they will not exist in 2030. We all know what happened to Kodak. They had plans to digitize their products in 10 years. To slow!! To slow!
