Science communication plays an important role in raising awareness and motivation to take action
I'm very much looking forward to speaking at today's Open Discussion Forum, hosted by UNECE Sustainable Energy!
The theme is "Creating perception and inspiring sustainable energy action". I will discuss the importance of intrinsic motivation ("want to") as opposed to extrinsic motivation ("have to") when inspiring or being inspired to take action toward a more sustainable future. And why science communication plays an important role.
Details for last minute registration at:
I would like to try to throw in some food for thought: Science and science communication are important, but only for societies and audiences which already value science - university graduates perhaps, people who consume tv shows and journals who shed science in a good light, and such. However, different audiences exist, not only in different parts of the world (say the global north vs the global south) but also within countries. For example, climate justice may resonate more in other contexts. All I'm saying is that science communication is not and should not be the only strategy for the 'want to' - it may turn out that the some of the solutions proposed may be quite science-less or even 'anti-science', that is going against current scientific wisdom

@haris_shekeris I agree that this is one possibility. Another example I mentioned in the presentation is telling stories.

Science communication is crucial for bridging the gap between scientific research and the general public, ultimately leading to informed decision-making and positive change.

This is commendable job, we need more awareness activities such as this.
And together we've planted over 150,000 trees. One tree is planted for every climate review written to an organization that is Open for Climate Dialogue™.
How does this work?
The Climate Action App
We plant a tree for every new user
Welcome, let's solve the climate crisis together
Write or agree to climate reviews to make businesses and world leaders act. It’s easy and it works.
