VENEZUELA'S OIL LEAKS, GAS FLARING CONTINUES TO DEVASTATE ENVIRONMENT, DESPITE PLEDGES OF REMEDY.

PDVSA's attempts to address its oil spill and gas flaring issues have fallen short, despite promises of cleanup by President Nicolas Maduro's administration. The company's struggles are a result of staffing shortages, lack of investment due to Venezuela's economic crisis, and U.S. sanctions. This not only impacts PDVSA's output and finances but also has negative effects on the communities around its operations, as noted by industry experts and environmentalists. Despite PDVSA's intentions to increase production, local residents and environmentalists are criticizing the worsening oil spills and pollution in Lake Maracaibo, as well as increased gas flaring in Monagas. These issues are causing harm to human health, wildlife, and ecosystems. President Maduro vowed to address the pollution in Lake Maracaibo and the government has plans to capture gas in Monagas. However, these efforts are being met with skepticism given the ongoing challenges faced by PDVSA. Both PDVSA and the environment ministry have made promises for environmental initiatives, such as planting five million cashew trees in oil-affected regions. However, these plans lack clear investments and timelines. According to engineer and environmental analyst Ausberto Quero, the government tends to initiate plans but often fails to follow through or sustains them for only a limited period before abandoning them. https://www.reuters.com/business/environment/venezuela-fails-curb-oil-leaks-gas-flaring-despite-pledges-sources-document-2023-08-17/

There should be monetary penalties for pollution which go up incrementally when unaddressed.

@johnte_ndeto it's understandable. Efforts to raise awareness, promote conservation, and support sustainable practices can help protect aquatic life in the region.
