āThe pollution level must come down, it cannot await tomorrow,ā court says.
Indiaās Supreme Court on Friday mandated a halt in crop residue burning in Delhiās neighboring states amid worsening air pollution in the national capital.
On Friday, heavy overnight rains brought some relief to millions struggling to cope as a toxic haze blanketed the National Capital Region (NCR) for more than a week due to the annual air crisis triggered by pollution, farm fires, and poor weather conditions.
āGod may have heard the prayers of people and intervened, no thanks to the government,ā said Supreme Court justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul.
Thursday nightās rains brought down the Air Quality Index (AQI) readings from 400+ to around 160 on Friday afternoon.
Talking about the farm fires which have often been blamed as one of the leading factors behind the pollution, the court said the society needs to be responsive to farmersā needs, while farm owners also need to be more responsible as they are a part of the society.

The intervention of India's top court in response to Delhi's toxic air crisis underscores the urgent need to prioritize public health and address air pollution. The recognition that people cannot be subjected to hazardous air and its detrimental impacts is a vital step towards ensuring a safe and healthy environment for all citizens. Delhi, like many other cities worldwide, faces severe air pollution challenges that demand immediate action. The court's intervention emphasizes the importance of implementing effective measures to reduce pollution levels, such as stricter emission controls, promoting clean energy sources, and implementing robust air quality monitoring systems. This intervention is a significant move towards safeguarding public health and underscores the commitment to providing clean and breathable air for all residents in affected areas.

Farmers need to be provided with alternative solutions to crop residue burning, such as composting or machinery for turning the residue into manure.
