Stockholm to create two new nature reserves and increase biodiversity protection

Stockholm's green coalition has just released its new budget and will allocate SEK 38.5 million (4 million €) in the coming year for nature conservation and biodiversity. This commitment will result in two new nature reserves in the district of Bromma and Söderort by 2025.

In the south of the city, northwest of Gubbängen, the forest Majroskogen houses endangered species like the candelabrum fungus and lesser spotted woodpecker. Protecting this area is vital for these species' survival and enables their movement within a larger green region, preserving biodiversity. These "green corridors" for wildlife face disruption with urban development, jeopardising essential ecological functions. so creating a Nature Reserve will help to preserve them. The other nature reserve is Ålstensskogen/Storskogen in Bromma.
Åsa Lindhagen, Environment and Climate Mayor from the Green Party (MP), emphasised nature's role in climate resilience, preventing floods, and sequestering carbon dioxide. "If we cut it down and build housing, everything is gone. We also want to build a city that is wonderful to live in", she said to Dagens Nyheter.
The city will also establish five biotope protection areas in 2024, enhancing nature protection in urban areas:
An area along Skönstaviks allé and Drevviken's shore in Sköndal. Olovslundsdammen in Bromma with surrounding forests. Parts of Rimiparken and Gubbkärrsskogen in Nockebyhov. An area northwest of Västerholmsskolan in Vårberg. Hillside and forest heights north of Vinterviken's valley.
This is great to see Stockholm's commitment to preserving nature and fighting climate change!

I'm glad to see that Stockholm is taking steps to protect its green spaces and to promote biodiversity. This is an example that other cities around the world can follow.
