Not all that glitters is gold: companies are struggling to develop and disclose consistent emissions reduction actions.

A very enlightening report. 🌍 Most large companies now have public climate strategies and targets, many of which include pledges that, on the face of it, appear to significantly reduce, or even eliminate, their contributions to global warming. The NewClimate Institute, together with the Carbon Market Watch recently assessed the climate strategies of 25 major global companies, critically analysing the extent to which they demonstrate corporate climate leadership. While firms claiming responsibility for their impact is a step in the right direction, many also take advantage of the ambiguity and lack of regulation in the field. As there currently is no blueprint on how climate ambitions are to be disclosed, it can be difficult to differentiate between climate leadership and greenwashing. 📏The numbers in short: net zero targets commit to reduce the analysed companies’ aggregate emissions by only 40% on average, instead of the 100% that many of the pledges suggest. So what? 👉There’s a strong need for concrete commitment, without relying on shortcuts as #offsetting, whenever possible.
