This coastal town in Spain is betting on wave power to go green

In the Basque Country in Spain, the town of Mutriku has been betting on wave energy to power the city for more than a decade. In 2011, it installed the Mutriku Wave Energy Plant commissioned by the Basque Energy Agency, the first commercial wave power plant in Europe.
The plant's 16 turbines generate up to 296 kilowatts of electricity by harnessing the force of the waves, enough to power around 250 homes and cut 600 tonnes of carbon emissions each year. In 2020, the plant reached a new milestone, having generated an accumulated figure of 2,000,000 kWh a record never achieved by any wave power facility. It shows the role marine power could play in the global transition towards clean energy

Mutriku now holds the record for the wave power plant with the longest time in service, most electricity generated, most electricity sold and most accumulated operating hours and availability. In 2016, five years after it was commissioned, Mutriku became the first facility of its kind to have produced one gigawatt hour.
