UN member states has finally agreed on a treaty to protect the high seas.
The historic treaty, which will cover almost two-thirds of the ocean that lies outside national boundaries, will provide a legal framework for establishing vast marine protected areas (MPAs) to protect against the loss of wildlife and share out the genetic resources of the high seas, according to The Guardian
The treaty will also establish a conference of the parties (Cop) that will meet periodically and enable member states to be held to account on issues such as governance and biodiversity.
At a later date, the delegates will meet for half a day to formally adopt the text.

This is a major step forward in protecting our shared ocean resources. The establishment of a legal framework to create MPAs and require member states to be held accountable is an important step in ensuring that our oceans remain healthy and diverse.

This is such good news that finally at the eleventh hour there is agreement to protect our seas and all the animals that live and depend on clean waters. However I suspect there is still much more needed to clean up the plastic that is already in the ocean and sea bed and damaging the fish and mammals and the interconnected food chain. This is a great start and I hope it won't take another 20 years to take these next steps. Congratulations to all the hard work of all behind the scenes.
